Make Media More Meaningful for Teaching and Learning
Learn how to make videos for instruction faster, better, deeper, and targeted to your student needs. Master the basics of screen capture for your own lessons or student projects; fast editing tools; downloading appropriate videos (YouTube, etc.) so videos for lessons can be independent from bandwidth speeds or buffering. Find media through Common Core interfaces, then download it, shorten it, or give it a new sound track (or have students do it).  Learn ways to present video in presentations like PowerPoint, Google Docs, Prezi, etc. If media is edging past text, then it must be just as easy to copy, paste, drag, drop, and manipulate. Media has always had great impact on teaching and learning.  Match its old power to a new generation. This is not hands on but you will want to play and practice.  Notes: Better to also have admin rights so you can download and practice.  Most tools are free but some are not—but are inexpensive. You might want download privileges on what you bring. Expect to have fun making things!

Capturing, Sharing, and Resolving Perplexity

Given the infinite buffet table of tools and technology to try out in the classroom, how do you decide what's worth your and your students' time? Without some kind of criteria guiding our selection, we'll spend years building up a dusty closet of tools that looked good, promised a lot, and didn't deliver. With that in mind, the presenter will describe "perplexity," one of the scarcest resources in the classroom, and how to pick tools and technology to maximize it.

LeVar Burton has been capturing the admiring attention of both audiences and his industry peers for three decades, and continues to enjoy longevity truly rare within the industry. His deftness in avoiding stereotype continues to be a hallmark of an incredibly diverse career. Launching his acting career in the groundbreaking role of Kunta Kinte in the landmark television series ROOTS, Burton found himself on the cover of Time Magazine at the age of 19. The honored recipient of 12 Emmy Awards, a Grammy and 5 NAACP awards, LeVar has demonstrated in his career that he can do it all, whether acting, directing, producing or writing. No greater proof of his enduring appeal and deep personal connection with his audience is the fact that LeVar is one of the most followed people in the world on Twitter, with over 1.7M followers.
